Abstract
Dramas, movies, and literature can enhance our understanding and application of psychoanalytic theories. In the Harry Potter series, one of the most popular blockbuster and novel series of the twenty-first century, many motifs of psychoanalytic theories are symbolized through magic tools such as the magic wand, invisible cloak, the Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry, and the polyjuice potion. Among these tools, the pensieve is a magic tool for saving and representing memories. The scenes involving the reexperiencing of memories and the solving of present problems, using the pensive, are similar to the psychoanalytic process of bringing repressed material into the consciousness in order to resolve symptoms. The pensieve can be viewed as a definite medium to analyze the trauma or fantasy of the patient, which the therapist is always curious about. We compared the features of the pensieve with psychoanalytic theories in order to study the clinical application of literature, although it is impossible to actually use magic tools like the pensieve in psychoanalytic therapy. We also tried to explore the techniques of hypnosis, psychodrama, and neuroimaging studies, which share features of the pensieve, and also explored the concept of the unconscious in various fields, for example, by examining the inventions of the field of information Technology, such as USB storage devices and personal cloud services.
